Today, Kosovo commemorates the Memorial Day of Survivors of Sexual Violence during the last war. This day serves to honor the suffering and trauma endured by those who experienced sexual violence during the conflict.

The observance aims to acknowledge the injustice faced by survivors and the long-lasting consequences of such crimes, while also raising awareness about delayed justice and the ongoing fight against stigma.

As part of today’s events, Acting President and Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu, paid tribute at the “Heroinat” Memorial. Meanwhile, the Kosovo Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims is hosting a regional conference titled “Advancing Access to Justice for Survivors of Wartime Sexual Violence: Criminal Responsibility and the Right to Compensation.” The event is attended by Haxhiu and Foreign Minister Donika Gërvalla.

In addition, the Assembly of Kosovo will hold a solemn session at 17:00 under the theme “Ma kthe dritën” (“Give Me Back the Light”), dedicated to honoring survivors.

April 14 has been officially designated as the Day of Survivors of Wartime Sexual Violence in Kosovo, contributing to the preservation of collective memory and reinforcing the need for solidarity with survivors.
