Today, the Labour Party will officially announce Andy Burnham as its new leader during a special conference. At the event, Burnham is expected to deliver a major speech, followed by another appearance later in the afternoon.
According to The Guardian, Burnham will say in his conference speech that he intends to lead a government with the “courage to tackle the major issues that politics has neglected” and the “conviction to defend our plans.”
A summary released overnight also states that Burnham will promise that under his leadership, the party will be “openly and unapologetically Labour in the priorities we set and the decisions we make, putting people and communities at the heart of everything we do.”
However, Burnham will not begin forming his government until Monday, when he is expected to be appointed prime minister, move into 10 Downing Street, and begin selecting his cabinet.
Burnham’s social media communication has gained significant attention in recent weeks. Another example came last night when he posted a video from Cardiff, where he held an event titled “Ask Andy Anything.” Sitting on a chair on the city’s main shopping street, he spoke directly with members of the public.
Asked about social care, Burnham said that his father suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, meaning he understands the challenges facing the social care system personally.
“If there is one area where I will invest a great deal of political capital, it will be social care,” Burnham said.
