Miloš Jovanović, leader of the New Democratic Party of Serbia (Novi DSS), said that high voter turnout and the opposition running in three separate blocs could lead to the fall of what he called the “regime of President Aleksandar Vučić.”
Jovanović said he hopes that future elections will offer citizens a choice between three opposition options: a student-backed list, an authentic right-wing bloc, and a pro-European coalition.
“If the authentic right, which supports a change of government and advocates cooperation but not Serbia’s membership in the European Union, does not appear in the next elections, votes from right-wing voters will go to those who have already said they will not cooperate with the rest of the opposition and who are even prepared to provide minority support to the current government,” Jovanović told TV Insajder, according to a statement published by his party.
Commenting on the ongoing parliamentary debate over a no-confidence motion against the Serbian government, Jovanović said that no major new developments had emerged, arguing that opposition representatives had presented numerous allegations involving government officials.
He criticized the current atmosphere in the Serbian Parliament, saying that parliamentary sessions no longer resemble meaningful debates due to the behavior of ruling majority lawmakers.
Jovanović added that his party does not want to legitimize the work of the Serbian Parliament by participating in its sessions.
“That is our principled position, although within the opposition there are voices arguing that parliamentary sessions are the only place where the voice of those opposing the government can be heard,” he said.
