Toronto Police are investigating a shooting targeting the U.S. Consulate in the city, marking the second such incident reported this year.
The incident occurred early Monday morning when a police officer stationed outside the consulate heard a single gunshot and saw a white vehicle without license plates leaving the scene.
Police briefly initiated a high-speed pursuit but later abandoned it due to safety concerns. No injuries have been reported, and authorities have not yet determined how many people were involved in the attack.
The shooting comes after Toronto Police arrested three individuals in March in connection with a similar incident. Investigators said that case was linked to a broader network allegedly involved in contract attacks.
Toronto Police are investigating the latest incident in cooperation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and international law enforcement partners, according to BBC.
RCMP Superintendent Jonathan Ko described the shooting as “another concerning incident,” while Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called it a “brazen” attack.
“I want to say to the person or persons responsible: We will find you,” Chow said.
The shooting took place at around 4:45 a.m. local time. Officers recovered a shell casing at the scene and found damage to the building’s exterior.
Toronto Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo said at least two people were inside the consulate at the time of the incident, adding that the building is “highly fortified” and those inside likely did not hear the gunshot.
Barredo said the investigation remains ongoing and that police units across the city have been instructed to search for the suspects.
“We will bring those responsible to justice,” he said.
The U.S. Consulate in Toronto thanked police for their response in a post on the social media platform X.
Police have maintained a presence outside the consulate since March, when another shooting occurred outside the building. Authorities at the time described that incident as a “national security incident.” No one was injured in that attack.
