Tensions escalated in Albania’s Parliament on Thursday after opposition lawmakers disrupted the plenary session, throwing bottles and pieces of cardboard toward Prime Minister Edi Rama as he left the chamber.
The unrest began after opposition deputies blocked the parliamentary podium, interrupting proceedings during the session.
Prime Minister Rama, who was present for the debate, decided to leave the chamber after Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi opened the voting procedure on items listed on the parliamentary agenda.
As the prime minister exited, opposition lawmakers continued their protest, hurling bottles and cardboard in his direction.
Earlier in the session, Speaker Peleshi ordered the expulsion of Democratic Party MP Gazment Bardhi after he, together with fellow opposition deputy Klevis Balliu, threw water at Prime Minister Rama during the proceedings.
The latest incident highlights the continuing political tensions between Albania’s ruling majority and the opposition, which has repeatedly disrupted parliamentary sessions in protest against the government.
