Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that he constantly thinks about his legacy in leading the country and suggested that there could be a competition among several candidates.

Putin served as president from 1999 to 2008, then as prime minister until 2012, and again as president from 2012 to the present. He is the longest-serving head of the Kremlin since Joseph Stalin.

“I always think about this,” Putin said when asked if he considered his legacy in a film by Russia’s state television marking a quarter of a century of his leadership, titled Russia, the Kremlin, Putin, 25 Years.

“Ultimately, the choice is for the people, for the Russian people.

“I think there should be one person, or rather several people, so that people have the opportunity to choose.”

However, according to the Russian constitution, there is no clear successor to Putin. If the president were unable to fulfill his duties, the prime minister currently Mikhail Mishustin would assume presidential powers.
