Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Gjurić has responded from Washington to statements made by former Serbian diplomat Nebojša Vujović, who claimed that during Gjurić’s U.S. visit he was presented with a secret, binding agreement for the recognition of Kosovo’s independence.

According to the Serbian media outlet Kossev, Gjurić described these claims as “false and fabricated.”

Vujović had stated that Gjurić was invited to Washington to be briefed by U.S. officials on a plan that would push Serbia toward formal recognition of Kosovo, adding that such a development would also serve the political calculations of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. These claims prompted an immediate reaction from the Serbian Foreign Minister during his three-day stay in the U.S.

Speaking to the media in Washington, Gjurić said it is “unbelievable” that a former Serbian diplomatic representative in the U.S. would make such claims.

He added that Kosovo was discussed during the meetings, but “from a completely different perspective” than the one Vujović claims.

Gjurić stated that the meetings with U.S. officials focused on the rights of Serbs in Kosovo and on developing cooperation between the U.S. and Serbia, asserting that Belgrade’s positions are being taken into account in Washington.

According to him, differences between the U.S. and Serbia remain, particularly regarding developments over the past 30 years, but there is room to advance the strategic dialogue between the two countries.
