Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his support for Iran and its leadership, according to the Kremlin.

The Russian president congratulated Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian on Nowruz, the Persian New Year, a statement said.

He also “wished the Iranian people strength in facing difficult trials with dignity and emphasized that during this challenging time, Moscow remains a reliable friend and a dependable partner of Tehran.”

For context: Earlier this week, the Kremlin dismissed reports that Russia was expanding intelligence-sharing and military cooperation with Iran, calling them “disinformation.”

Putin had previously spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump about the war involving Iran, with Trump saying they had “a very good conversation” by phone and that “[Putin] wants to help.”

However, in later remarks, the American president also suggested that Putin “may be helping [Iran] somewhat.”
