Alexander Stubb stated that “a more European NATO is forming” and that Europe “is taking responsibility into its own hands” during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to a statement from his office reported to Reuters, Stubb emphasized the changing role of Europe within NATO at a time of high international tensions.
On the same day, Trump indicated that he is considering the possibility of the U.S. withdrawing from NATO, reiterating criticisms of the alliance and linking the discussion to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions with Iran.
The phone conversation between the two leaders focused on key international issues, including the conflict with Iran and developments in Ukraine.
In a post on the platform X, Stubb described his communication with Trump as “constructive,” highlighting an open exchange of views. He added that international challenges require pragmatic solutions, underlining that “problems exist to be solved.”
