Giorgia Meloni has held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a period of heightened diplomatic tension involving the two countries, following repeated criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to reports, the talks focused on several major international issues, including the conflict in the Persian Gulf, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, U.S. tariffs on European goods, and the diplomatic and economic isolation strategy toward Cuba.

Rubio is currently in Rome for a two-day visit. During his trip, he also met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, with discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States, according to a Vatican statement.
