The extreme heatwave that hit Germany at the end of June has caused more than 5,000 excess deaths, according to preliminary data from the German Federal Statistical Office.
According to the figures, 5,486 more deaths were recorded during the final week of June compared with the average for the years 2022–2025.
This period coincided with the peak of the heatwave, when Germany experienced record temperatures, with some areas of the country reaching above 41 degrees Celsius.
