U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he has “no tension” with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, despite having recently announced a complete halt to trade with Spain, according to Anadolu.
“I don’t have any tension with him. I don’t have tension with anybody,” Trump told reporters after Spain’s 1–0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.
The U.S. president said he congratulated Spanish officials on their “great team”, describing the final as a “great event.” He also dismissed suggestions that he was disappointed by Argentina’s defeat, saying that “Spain played better,” although it was “a very close match.”
Trump’s conciliatory remarks mark a notable shift in tone.
Earlier this month, he described Spain as “a lost cause” and “a terrible NATO partner” after Madrid refused to allow U.S. forces access to Spanish military bases during the conflict with Iran and declined to commit to NATO’s proposed 5% defense spending target.
At a press conference during the NATO Summit in Ankara, Türkiye, Trump had stated:
“I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Stop all trade with Spain, please, including visits.”
His latest comments suggest a softer public stance following the World Cup final.
