Former Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has called for the election of a new president who will protect the country’s Constitution and national interests, as political parties continue efforts to resolve the country’s institutional deadlock.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Osmani said the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) was prepared to give up demands for government positions in an effort to avoid another round of parliamentary elections.
“Let us give the country a President of the Republic who protects the Constitution and the country,” Osmani wrote.
She stressed that political decisions should be guided by long-term considerations rather than short-term gains.
“We are not here only for today. Above all, we are here for the generations that will come after us, who should not judge us for the power we took, but for the state we left them,” she said.
Osmani was the LDK’s candidate for president and served as the party’s lead candidate in Kosovo’s June 7 parliamentary elections.
Her statement comes after LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku announced that the party would withdraw all demands for participation in government, including its request for the presidency, and would remain in opposition.
The issue of electing a president has been at the center of Kosovo’s recent political crisis. The failure of the Assembly to elect a new head of state previously triggered the dissolution of parliament and snap elections.
Osmani’s latest remarks appear to reinforce the LDK’s position that resolving the institutional crisis should take precedence over securing government posts, while emphasizing the importance of electing a president capable of safeguarding Kosovo’s constitutional order.
