U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz “the Strait of Trump,” continuing his recent push to rename prominent geographic landmarks.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump asked whether the strategically important waterway should be given his name, claiming that it is now under U.S. control.
“Now that we have it under U.S. control, shouldn’t we change the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the STRAIT OF TRUMP??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” Trump wrote.
The proposal comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints. The waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a major route for global energy shipments.
Trump has previously floated the idea of placing the Strait of Hormuz under U.S. control. His latest proposal to rename it follows a series of controversial geographic name changes pursued by his administration.
Last year, Trump moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” More recently, he signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
Unlike those bodies of water, however, the Strait of Hormuz is not located within U.S. territory. The waterway is bordered by Iran and Oman, making any unilateral U.S. attempt to alter its internationally recognized name particularly contentious.
Trump’s latest proposal has so far been presented as a political statement rather than a formal change to the waterway’s internationally recognized name.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical artery for global trade and a major point of strategic competition between the United States and Iran.
