Donald Trump has reclaimed control in the USA, delivering a victory speech emphasizing that the American people have “taken back control.” With Republicans now dominating the Senate and likely to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives, the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) agenda is poised to exert significant influence.

Trump: More Prepared Than in 2016

Unlike his first victory, Trump is now more prepared and determined to surround himself with loyal supporters. Stormy-Annika Mildner from the Aspen Institute points out that the appointment and exchange of officials in key institutions are expected to be far more controlled this time around.

“Project 2025” and New Rules

A central part of this agenda is “Project 2025,” a strategic document backed by the conservatives at the Heritage Foundation. Trump has embraced the core policies of this project, including stricter immigration regulations and easing restrictions on the exploitation of fossil fuels. These measures include “the largest deportation operation in American history” and limiting the powers of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Modifying Federal Institutions

Trump’s plan also includes transforming federal institutions to help enforce his policies, including restructuring the EPA. Former EPA chief of staff Mandy Gunasekara may assume a leading role, advancing the agenda to overhaul the agency.

Justice and the Judiciary: A Key Focus

Another crucial area is the Department of Justice, which Trump has vowed to use to prosecute political opponents. Republicans also have the opportunity to appoint more conservative judges, solidifying influence for an entire generation. John Collins, a law professor at George Washington University, highlights that Trump has the chance to further reshape the judiciary.

Expected Clashes and Balanced Oversight

Despite conservative control of key institutions, there are still checks and balances in place, such as the media and Democrat-led states. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has pledged to oppose any policy that harms her constituents. Experts believe that the USA has the capacity to endure these tensions, although political polarization is expected to deepen.
