Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has summoned the top diplomat at the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen following reports that American citizens carried out influence operations in Greenland, Danish public broadcaster DR reported on Wednesday, citing the minister.
U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated that he wanted the United States to take over the Arctic island, rich in minerals and strategically important for both national and international security, and did not rule out the use of force to achieve this, Reuters reported.
According to DR, the Danish government believes that at least three American citizens with ties to the Trump administration were involved in covert influence operations on Danish territory. The broadcaster did not name the individuals.
“Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the kingdom will of course be unacceptable,” Rasmussen was quoted as saying.
“In this light, I have asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the U.S. chargé d’affaires for a discussion,” he added.
The U.S. mission in Copenhagen is currently headed by Chargé d’Affaires Mark Stroh, according to its official website.
