The Secretary-General of the European Democratic Party, Sandro Goci, stated today that the President of the Serbian Parliament, Ana Brnabić, “no longer acts as the Speaker of the Parliament, but as the spokeswoman for the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.”
“I think we are already accustomed to the behavior of your Parliament Speaker, who no longer fulfills the role of the Speaker. I would say she acts as the spokesperson of your President. And she continues on that path—legitimately. From her perspective, the glass is half full. What matters to us is that the European Commission (EC) has finally acknowledged the setbacks in the rule of law and democracy in Serbia,” Goci told N1, commenting on the European Commission’s report and Ana Brnabić’s view that the most important recommendation is the opening of Cluster 3.
Goci emphasized that the EC has listened to the citizens of Serbia, the Serbian opposition, and the European Parliament.
“You know that we, as European Democrats, and through our parliamentary group ‘Renew Europe,’ have since August taken initiatives to ensure the Parliament seriously addresses what is happening in Serbia. We initiated two resolutions that were adopted by the European Parliament. We strongly supported Commissioner Marta Kos, who had the courage to finally produce a report that reflects the political and institutional reality in Serbia,” Goci said, according to Beta.
He described the European Commission’s report as a very important step forward to get Serbia back on the right track.
Goci noted that if Serbia does not fundamentally correct its course regarding the rule of law, the judiciary, democracy, media freedom, respect for basic freedoms of expression, and the right to assembly, and if it cannot open all chapters, it will remain far from its ultimate goal of EU membership.
“I believe the citizens of Serbia deserve better, but it is clear that there are very important issues highlighted by the Commission in its report, which President Vučić and the Serbian government must urgently address,” he said.
He also added that his party fully supports Diana Hrka in her fight for truth and justice, as well as the struggles of Serbian citizens and students.
