A civilian has emerged as the central figure in the tragic events at Bondi Beach after intervening to neutralize one of the perpetrators of the Sydney shooting.
The individual is 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, who reacted immediately by disarming the attacker at a moment when gunfire was threatening the lives of civilians present in the area.
Footage shared on social media shows the moment he approached the attacker from behind, seized the weapon, and forced him to the ground, effectively stopping the attack.
According to Australian media, Ahmed al Ahmed is a fruit vendor and the father of two children. He was injured during the incident, sustaining two gunshot wounds. Reports indicate that he had no prior experience with firearms and happened to be in the area by chance.
His actions were widely praised by both the public and authorities. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described him as a “hero.”
Police confirmed that at least 11 people lost their lives in the attack, which targeted the Jewish community during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach. A total of 29 people were taken to hospital, including one child.
Authorities have confirmed that two suspects have been identified. One has died, while the other remains in critical condition in hospital.
