The police in Mirditë have arrested 35-year-old Martin Zheri, who was wanted internationally by Italian authorities.
Zheri was apprehended in the town of Rrëshen while traveling as a passenger in a vehicle. He was temporarily detained with the intention of being extradited to Italy.
Italian authorities accuse Zheri of being part of a criminal group responsible for 71 burglaries and attempted armed burglaries in residential homes across four regions in Italy during 2023.
In 2024, the Milan Court issued a prison sentence for Zheri, citing charges including illegal possession of firearms, violent theft, and property destruction, committed as part of the organized criminal group.
Additionally, Albanian police have initiated criminal proceedings against G.N., 37, the driver of the vehicle in which Zheri was traveling, for aiding and abetting a criminal.
Interpol Tirana is collaborating with its international counterparts to complete the extradition procedure for Martin Zheri to Italy.
