Kosovo’s ski athletes, Drin Kokaj and Kiana Kryeziu, proudly represented the country during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, officially launching the global sporting event in northern Italy.

The opening ceremony took place Friday evening at the iconic “San Siro” stadium, marking the start of the prestigious competition jointly hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Winter Olympics are scheduled to run until February 22, with events taking place across ten venues in three northern Italian regions.

Kosovo’s Representation on the Global Stage

Kokaj and Kryeziu carried Kosovo’s presence onto one of the world’s largest sporting platforms, symbolizing the country’s continued efforts to expand its participation in winter sports and strengthen its international sporting identity.

Their participation highlights Kosovo’s ongoing development in competitive skiing and reinforces its commitment to promoting young athletes on the global stage.

Record Participation and Gender Balance

The Winter Olympics 2026 feature 2,871 athletes from 92 countries, showcasing nearly equal gender representation, reflecting the International Olympic Committee’s efforts toward inclusivity and equality in sports.

A total of 116 medal events will be contested across 16 winter sports disciplines, including:

  • Alpine skiing
  • Biathlon
  • Ice hockey
  • Figure skating
  • Skeleton
  • Ski mountaineering, introduced as a new Olympic discipline
  • And several other winter sports categories

The games are expected to draw global attention, bringing together elite athletes and millions of viewers worldwide while celebrating sportsmanship, unity, and cultural exchange.
