Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen has called for the reinstatement of sanctions against the nationalist former president of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik.

She said that the Trump Administration should feel ashamed of its decision to remove Republika Srpska leader Milorad Dodik from U.S. sanctions last October.

“Mr. Dodik has used separatist rhetoric and undermined the integrity of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which directly contradicts the administration’s justification for removing Mr. Dodik and his associates from the sanctions list at the end of last year,” she said.

Dodik is currently in the United States, where other political figures have also traveled to attend the National Prayer Breakfast. Yesterday, Dodik announced that he had met with U.S. President Donald Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt.

Shaheen strongly criticized Dodik’s stay in the United States.

“Mr. Dodik’s visit to Washington has made it abundantly clear that he is not interested in putting the interests of all citizens of Bosnia ahead of his own political interests. The Trump Administration must act swiftly to reinstate sanctions against Mr. Dodik, in line with the mandatory sanctions I secured in the most recent National Defense Authorization Act,” she wrote.
