At least 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard of Mexico have been killed in a wave of violence in the state of Jalisco following the death of a top drug cartel leader, according to Mexico’s Minister of Security, as reported by BBC and Gazeta Express.

The unrest has spread across at least 20 states since Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho”, died in custody on Sunday, immediately after being captured by Mexican special forces.

Mexico has deployed 2,500 soldiers to the western part of the country to reinforce security, stated Secretary of Defense Ricardo Trevilla on Monday.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is one of Mexico’s most feared criminal groups, and its leader was the country’s most wanted man prior to his death.
