Tensions erupted inside Kosovo’s Assembly on Wednesday as female lawmakers from the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) confronted Vetëvendosje MP Arbërie Nagavci during a televised interview.
According to footage and reports from the scene, the opposition lawmakers threw water, papers and plastic cups in Nagavci’s direction while she was speaking, while also shouting insults and banging on tables inside the Assembly hall.
The confrontation unfolded amid the continuing political deadlock over the constitution of the new Assembly and repeated attempts to convene a session.
The incident further escalated the already tense atmosphere between the ruling Vetëvendosje camp and opposition parties, which have been sharply divided over the procedure and timing for continuing the constitutive session.
Nagavci, a senior Vetëvendosje lawmaker, has been among the party’s key figures defending its position on the Assembly’s constitution and the need for political agreement.
The latest confrontation comes after previous incidents of physical disruption in the Assembly. On August 8, AAK MP Time Kadrijaj threw eggs at acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a parliamentary session, forcing lawmakers to postpone proceedings.
The continuing disputes have prevented the Assembly from completing its constitution and have deepened Kosovo’s institutional crisis, with political parties accusing one another of obstructing the formation of functioning institutions.
