Acting Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said Thursday that the political agreement reached with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has suffered a “serious blow” but has not been invalidated, while stressing that new elections can still be avoided if lawmakers vote for Bekim Sejdiu as president.
Asked whether he would hold further talks with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku, Kurti said the agreement represented a significant achievement for both political parties and that there was still an opportunity to avoid elections and strengthen Kosovo’s institutions.
“The political agreement we reached has taken a serious blow, but it has not been invalidated. It is a major success of our two political entities, and those who want institutional stability, the avoidance of elections and the strengthening of the state still have an opportunity,” Kurti told Ekonomia Online.
He emphasized that the agreement had produced a specific presidential candidate, referring to constitutional law professor Bekim Sejdiu.
“And this is the specific name that emerged from the political agreement, namely Professor Bekim Sejdiu,” Kurti said.
Kurti declined to say whether another candidate could be proposed for president, leaving open the possibility of further developments as Kosovo’s political parties seek a way out of the institutional deadlock.
The dispute over the presidential election has kept Kosovo’s institutions under pressure, with the failure to secure the necessary parliamentary support potentially paving the way for new elections.
