Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he expects to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in New York later this month, while leaving open the possibility of a future trilateral meeting involving Russia.
Zelensky made the announcement during a press conference in Canada, saying Ukrainian and U.S. officials would have an opportunity to meet in New York toward the end of September.
“Toward the end of the month, we will have the opportunity to meet, I believe, with the American team in New York,” Zelensky said, referring to a potential meeting with Trump.
The meeting is expected to take place as diplomatic efforts to find a path toward ending Russia’s war against Ukraine intensify.
White House special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have recently traveled to Moscow and Kyiv as part of U.S. efforts to advance negotiations and explore possible avenues toward ending the conflict.
Zelensky said Ukrainian and American negotiating teams remain in constant contact and expressed hope that his meeting with Trump could produce progress on issues including energy and Ukrainian grain exports.
The Ukrainian president did not rule out the possibility of a trilateral summit involving Russia as part of broader peace efforts. However, he said such a meeting would not take place before Russia’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for September 20.
The timing of any potential trilateral meeting therefore remains uncertain, as Kyiv and Washington continue diplomatic efforts while Russia prepares for the parliamentary vote.
