Andy Burnham is set to officially become the United Kingdom’s new prime minister on Monday after being elected leader of the Labour Party following the resignation of Keir Starmer.
Burnham, 56, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, will be formally invited by King Charles III to form a new government before delivering his first address outside 10 Downing Street.
Following his appointment, Burnham is expected to unveil a new Cabinet and outline his government’s priorities, with a strong focus on tackling the cost-of-living crisis and reducing regional economic inequalities across the United Kingdom.
The change in leadership will not trigger a general election. Under the UK’s parliamentary system, the governing party can elect a new leader, who automatically becomes prime minister provided they retain the confidence of a majority in the House of Commons.
The next UK general election is currently expected to take place in 2029.
