Hundreds of people have gathered on a central street in Belgrade to celebrate the victory of the “Students Win” Student List in Serbia’s early parliamentary elections.

During the celebrations, flares were lit and car horns could be heard, while candidates and students at the list’s headquarters chanted and cheered “Victory”.

“Never again a tyrant in our country,” said Ilija Srdanović, the lead candidate of the Student List.

Meanwhile, Aleksandar Vučić, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) candidate for prime minister and former president of Serbia, conceded defeat. He said that, according to estimates based on a sample of results, the Student List was expected to win between 135 and 140 parliamentary seats, while his list was projected to secure around 105.

Vučić stated that his list had received approximately 1.72 million votes, compared with around 2.2 million for the Student List.

The Serbian Progressive Party has been in power since 2012.
