The U.S. capital is preparing for Donald Trump’s inauguration, with authorities taking unprecedented security measures following a campaign marked by violence. The inauguration of Trump on Monday will be the “third most important national security event” in two weeks, following the ratification of the presidential election results by Congress and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.
Washington is used to such events, but rarely do so many occur in such a short time frame. City officials are preparing to welcome fewer visitors than the ones who attended Trump’s first inauguration eight years ago, when officials predicted that up to a million people would flock to Washington.
Barricades have already been set up around the White House, the Capitol, and part of the route that the new American president will follow. A record number of 48 kilometers of iron security barriers have been erected within the security perimeter.
Additionally, around 25,000 police officers and military personnel will be stationed in Washington, according to Matt McCool, a Secret Service agent responsible for the protection of key political figures, including presidents.
“We have a more solid security plan than in previous years,” he said this week, adding that “a series of security measures have been taken, some of which are visible and some are not.”
Moreover, the guests at the oath-taking will undergo thorough checks, snipers will be positioned on the rooftops of nearby buildings, drones will monitor the event from above, and ground security teams will be present. “What has changed is that we are in a more threatening environment,” McCool said.
