In a span of just 24 hours, Kosovo has witnessed a disturbing surge in domestic violence, with eight cases reported — including murder, attempted murder, and multiple instances of physical assault, most of them targeting women.
Among the most tragic events, a 34-year-old man reportedly stabbed his 30-year-old wife before fatally stabbing himself inside a building on Rruga B in Prishtina. The incident, which occurred midday Friday, was confirmed by police a day later. Emergency units found the man dead at the scene, while the woman, though wounded, survived.
Ferizaj: Brother Shoots Sister
In another chilling case, a 19-year-old male is suspected of shooting his 25-year-old sister in Ferizaj on Saturday morning. Police responded swiftly, arresting the suspect and seizing the firearm. The victim was treated in Ferizaj and later transferred to UCCK in Prishtina, where she is reported to be in stable condition.
Six More Cases of Domestic Abuse
The police daily report also listed six other incidents of domestic violence across Kosovo:
- Lipjan: A man assaulted his wife during a dispute. He was arrested and sent to serve a prior court sentence.
- Obiliq: A man was detained for physically abusing his wife, who received medical care.
- Ferizaj: A woman reported receiving threatening messages from her ex-husband. He was arrested and remains in custody.
- Klinë: A man suspected of ongoing physical and psychological abuse was questioned by police; both parties were released pending further investigation.
- Istog: An intoxicated man assaulted his ex-wife. She received treatment, while he was taken into custody.
- Zubin-Potok: A woman was physically assaulted by her husband but declined medical attention. No arrest has been reported yet.
Authorities Urged to Take Immediate Action
Security expert Arben Dashevci described the situation as alarming, calling for a joint national strategy between law enforcement and justice institutions.
“These events are deeply troubling and unacceptable. We must find the root causes and respond urgently and collectively. The frequency of such crimes is not only concerning — it’s intolerable.”
A Week Marked by Tragedy
Earlier this week, another horrific case shook Kosovo. On Tuesday, a 15-year-old girl was killed and her 10-year-old sister injured in Prizren, both stabbed inside their home. The suspect: their 44-year-old father, a Turkish national who had recently moved to Kosovo.
These events reveal a growing epidemic of domestic violence that demands not only legal accountability but also societal introspection and institutional reform.
