Hamas should have no role in the governance of Gaza, said Emmanuel Macron in statements made on Monday during his visit to Egypt.
The French president stated that members of the Palestinian organization “should no longer pose a threat to Israel,” while reiterating his “full support for the Gaza reconstruction plan” approved by the Arab League.
Macron also declared that he is strongly opposed to any displacement or annexation of Gaza and the West Bank.
“This would be a violation of international law and a serious threat to the security of the entire region, including Israel,” he said during a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Sisi, for his part, spoke about the issues with the Houthis in the Red Sea, emphasizing that “this tension has negatively impacted” Egypt’s revenues from the Suez Canal, resulting in a loss of $7 billion in 2024.
Rebel attacks on ships in the Red Sea have led to a reduction in maritime traffic through the route and the Suez Canal, which in turn has reduced Egypt’s revenues, as the country charges fees for passage through the canal.
