The main suspect in one of the most notorious killings of the Syrian civil war, Amjad Youssef, has been arrested, according to Syria’s Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
Youssef was wanted for his alleged role in the mass killing of civilians in April 2013 in the Tadamon neighborhood of Damascus. The case gained global attention after shocking footage surfaced in 2022, reportedly showing Syrian soldiers leading blindfolded and bound victims to a pit before executing them.
The video became one of the most direct visual pieces of evidence pointing to extrajudicial killings carried out by government forces during the Syrian Civil War.
Khattab stated that Youssef is believed to be the primary perpetrator of the massacre and was taken into custody following a security operation. According to Syrian state media, he was arrested in the province of Hama.
The arrest marks a significant development in a case long cited by human rights groups as emblematic of wartime abuses in Syria.
