Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has arrived in Washington, D.C. for a high-level meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. The visit comes at a critical moment for EU–U.S. trade relations, following Trump’s recent imposition of a 20% tariff on European goods earlier this month.
Meloni becomes the first European leader to visit the U.S. capital since the tariffs were introduced. Although the tariffs have now been suspended for 90 days, the meeting is seen as a crucial opportunity to reset transatlantic dialogue.
According to the BBC, the discussions are expected to include not only trade but also wider geopolitical concerns, such as transatlantic cooperation and the war in Ukraine.
The visit is being closely watched in European capitals, with analysts viewing it as a test of Italy’s role within the EU and its relationship with the United States under Trump’s renewed leadership.
