Incoming German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced his Cabinet picks, featuring a combination of trusted allies and expert appointments. Merz, who is set to be formally elected as Chancellor on May 6, 2025, has selected Johann Wadephul as the new foreign minister. Wadephul is a seasoned expert in defense and foreign policy, having been by Merz’s side during key diplomatic visits, including to Ukraine and the Munich Security Conference.

In the economy minister role, Katherina Reiche, former CEO of the energy company Westenergie, has been appointed. This pick reflects Merz’s intention to bring business expertise to the government. Additionally, Thorsten Frei, a close ally of Merz, will serve as chief of staff.

The Christian Social Union (CSU), the CDU’s sister party, has nominated Alexander Dobrindt for the role of interior minister.

Merz’s selection also includes business figures like Karsten Wildberger, former CEO of electronics retail giants Saturn and Media Markt, who will head the newly created Digitalization and Modernization Ministry.

Merz has been praised for his expertise-based approach, despite concerns about his predominantly male Cabinet, which consists of four men and three women.

The critical question remains how quickly Merz will be able to implement his Cabinet’s agenda.
