European Parliament rapporteur for Kosovo Riho Terras has described the election of Kosovo’s president as the country’s “main challenge” following a prolonged political deadlock.
Terras made the remarks after meeting Peter Due, head of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).
In a statement following the meeting, Terras noted that Kosovo’s Assembly has now elected its leadership after months of political deadlock, but said the next major challenge is completing the process by electing a president.
“After a prolonged political deadlock, the Assembly has elected its leadership. The next and main challenge is the election of the President,” Terras said.
He emphasized that political stability and dialogue between Kosovo’s communities remain essential to the country’s European path.
“Stability in Kosovo and dialogue between communities are essential for its path towards Europe,” Terras said.
His comments come as Kosovo’s institutions continue efforts to complete the constitutional process and avoid another political crisis, with the presidential election requiring sufficient parliamentary support and quorum under the Constitution.
