In the night of Tuesday, more than 30 Muslim graves were destroyed and desecrated in the Leshce Muslim Cemetery in Belgrade, local media report.

According to Telegraf in Serbia, the vandals severely damaged marble slabs, particularly in the area where the crescent moon and star, a symbol of Muslim identity, were displayed. Photographs of the deceased were also shattered and scattered carelessly throughout the cemetery.

The most significant damage occurred near the fence surrounding the Muslim section of the cemetery.

The attack was strongly condemned by Mufti of Belgrade, Mustafa Jusufspahić, who described the act as not only an assault on the Muslim community but also an attack on the very foundations of human civilization and respect for the dead.

“We express our deepest condolences to the families affected by this inhumane act. Our hearts are profoundly wounded, and our spirits filled with sorrow as we witness the desecration of graves—symbols of our cultural and spiritual heritage,” declared Mufti Jusufspahić.

He added that such an act cannot go unchallenged and called for a strong and determined response from both the authorities and society.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the identity of the perpetrators or the motives behind this act of vandalism.
